Kim (Bavin) Cowart grew up in Connecticut showing horses and when she made the decision that training is what she wanted to do, she spent time working for three of the best: Marty Mueller, Donna Moore and Bob Vesel.
In 1989, she married Peter Cowart and they established West Wind Stables, eventually purchasing and building a beautiful facility on 60 acres in Statesville, NC. In addition to many amateur and junior exhibitor world’s champions for customers they have also enjoyed great success with their daughter Camille (CHJusta Rascal, CHHeathermoor Prince, Callaway’s Born To Ride, Undulata Pressure).
Kim and Peter have won four world’s grand championships between them with CHA Sweet Treat, CHReal Action, CHBreaking News and CHThe Daily Lottery. In addition to training and showing walk-trot greats like CHA Sweet Treat and CHI’m McDreamy, Kim has been a mainstay in the ladies gaited division at Louisville, especially with geldings. CHPlatinum’s New Look (catch riding for the Chancellors), world’s champion of champions CHMy Wonder, and world’s champions of champions CHHe’s In Style are among those standouts. A well-rounded horsewoman she has also enjoyed success in the harness division with stars like Ladies Fine Harness World’s Champion of Champions CHLace’s Last Tango, Three-Year-Old Fine Harness Mare World’s Champion Amelie and reserve world’s champion Best Show In Vegas.
Serving as a USEF judge is one of the ways Kim gives back to the sport. She and Peter have also been successful breeders, raising a few foals on their farm each year. Developing young horses is something they really love.
